Credit cards are not for everyone, if you use them, please be responsible.
Disclaimer out of the way, be careful with your information and how the credit card company/financial institution uses your information. I had a student loan with a financial institution when in college and after the loan was paid off, I changed my name. Then I got a credit card offer from them. The credit card offer had my current legal name and I liked the benefits of the card, so I applied and got the card. This institution issued the card in my previous name. The card offer was in my new legal name just like my driver’s license, social security card, and credit report, but the card was issued with my previous name. I called and explained the mistake and they told me to go to a branch with my ID and it would be fixed. At the branch, I was told you need all these documents for us to do that. I shared how the application was, how all this information was, etc. I had multiple forms of ID including DL and SS and they had to have something else.
I called customer service and closed the account. They tried to talk me out of it, but I explained if they are not willing to recognize legal documents with my legal name, then I don’t trust them with my business. I know in California; you have the right to be forgotten. Which is the right to have private information about yourself removed from internet searches and other directories. This essentially erases your previous dealings with those companies. Other states may have it too, mine does not, but because I had previously done business with this institution under a previous name, they wouldn’t update their system without me providing several things even though they clearly knew my legal name but chose to ignore it. I wish my state had the right to be forgotten. I think this right would help not only in these instances but also reduce data breaches and identity theft.
