Root of All Evil

Posted on January 1, 2024March 15, 2025 by DF Johnson

They say money is the root of all evil but how can an inanimate object have any power? Why is it after a family member passes, people’s true colors emerge? People become monsters and they say I want a lot. During the last week of my memaw’s life, she was in the hospital. My aunt who I had not seen in years had reappeared. One day in the cafeteria she started asking my mom where certain things were. My mom informed her that when my memaw moved into the nursing home they had to get rid of a lot of things. Once my aunt realized there was nothing left of monetary value she disappeared again. Why does money make people monsters? How do we stop from becoming one?

It’s Actually Comes from Within

My spouse’s brother is the executor of their dad’s will and asked if he had the ability to sell things without my spouse’s permission and was told yes. He wanted to exclude my spouse and does still. This comes from within the person. If the person feels that do not have enough or they deserve more that is where this comes from. It’s the same thing with power in the old saying, “Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”.

How to Avoid it

I think we all have this “evil” inside of us, but we avoid it by keeping ourselves in check. Know our situations and plan for them. One way to do this is to work towards being financially independent to where any money you would get in this situations does not corrupt you. Plan for it, know what your priorities are and what you need to do. Pay off debt, donate to a charity, build your emergency fund. Do not go buy a new house, new car; the expensive luxuries until you have taken care of the necessities and don’t have debt.
