I was talking to a friend and they told me they had canceled their gym membership after two years of not using it. Even if it’s a $5 a month membership for two years that is $120. I could fill up my SUV at least three times with that. Gym memberships are good, but if you aren’t utilizing it that is pouring your money down the drain. Also, I have heard that gym membership are hard to cancel because they make it difficult so you can’t cancel. They want your money.
It is not just gym memberships
This day in age we have streaming services. We can’t just have one, we have to have multiple if not all. But that is a huge waste of money. I am glad some of them are combining and making it better, but I know people who have to have each and every service. I think every service is too much, but one or two are good if you use them. I only watch TV when I am sick or tired for the most part, so for me it is not worth it. My spouse on the other hand is a TV buff and watches after work, going to bed, during the weekend. So for my spouse having one or two is good, but we do not have everything. For us, we also have to factor in what the kids watch and have the appropriate one for our youngest.
Weigh the Benefits of Memberships
I am a member of various HR organizations. From these memberships, I get networking, updates and news, discounts on continuing education, job searches, a HR call center and more. To me these are justified as it helps me be better in my career. If these memberships were just a line on my resume to say I am part of this, it would not be justifiable to me. See what you get and if it is worth it to you. Two sayings I remember hearing that applies here, “Money doesn’t grow on trees” and “You can’t take it with you when you go”. Save your money if you not using the membership.
