Doing the right thing vs feeling obligated to do the right thing?

Posted on February 12, 2024March 15, 2025 by DF Johnson

Today my family was at the office store and bought a few items. After we left my spouse looked at the receipt and realized the cashier had not rung up one of the items. The cashier scanned all the items but did not realize all the items had optional warranty coverage questions which prevented the item scanned from adding to the purchases. We drove back to the store and informed the cashier and she rang up the additional item and we paid for it. Yes, we could have just not have gone back, we’d just be cheating in life to get ahead. It’s not worth getting ahead in life if you have to cheat people or companies. We did not go back because we felt obligated to but because we knew it was the right thing to do.

This Was Also Being An Example for Our Son

Our son was with us and it was a good example for him. It shows him to be kind and do the right thing. just because we could get away with it doesn’t mean we should. Showing him what morals are and that we have a conscience. It teaches him to do the right thing as he grows up and even now.

The Negative Effect on the Business

This hurts the business and the employees. First the direct employee could get in trouble if the company found out and we cannot predict the effect it would have on them. Also, the ramifications of the company could be numerous. The company loses money and could end up raising prices to offset their losses, which in turn affects all their customers and competition will follow, affecting every customer. If the company continues losing money, they could be forced to merge, file for bankruptcy and/or go out of business. Being responsibly isn’t always cheap, but it is the right thing to do and helps ourselves and others more than just saving a few bucks.

Friendly reminder: do not buy extended warranties on low cost items.
